Common search engine optimization mistakes

Common search engine optimization mistakes

With online marketing and social media marketing become such a popular form of advertising, it’s no surprise that more people are trying to make search engine optimization work for them.  However, many new entrepreneurs’ don’t know what they’re doing.  Here is a list of the 5 most common search engine optimization mistakes I’ve seen most new business owners make:

Common Search Engine Optimization Mistakes | Not researching proper keywords

One of the most common search engine optimization mistakes a new entrepreneur makes on their website is not researching the proper keyword in which to focus.  Don’t make the fatal assumption that people are searching for the keywords that you have chosen. Selecting the proper keywords requires research. Find out what your competitions’ websites are using for their keywords as well.   Finally, make certain that the keywords you choose bring targeted traffic from people willing to take action on your site, not just people who are actually looking for around.  500 people on your site each day looking for dance instructions does no good if you’re offering an SEO Optimization manual!  Therefore, it’s important to avoid one of the more common search engine optimization mistakes of targeting the wrong keywords!

Common Search Engine Optimization Mistakes |Overdoing keywords

When creating a site, it’s important to realize that sometimes, less can be more.  Don’t fall into the trap of the common search engine optimization mistake that others make by unnecessarily cramming more keywords than ‘natural’ on your site or on your blog.  While you want to have keywords to maximize SEO, you also want to make sure your copy is viable to humans too.  In fact, when writing copy for your site, the customer is ALWAYS your first priority, not SEO.  If your copy doesn’t hook them and motivate them to take action, it’s all for nothing. Focus on writing natural sounding, compelling content, and if you can naturally fit in keywords, then do so.  As a good rule of thumb, keep your keyword percentage between 1-4%.

Common Search Engine Optimization Mistakes |Stopping your SEO efforts

“I wrote 3 blogs and didn’t get 100 visits in a day so I stopped my SEO program because it obviously doesn’t work.”  Uggh.  SEO is NOT a one-time deal. To successfully optimize your site, you must consistently add content.  I wouldn’t even expect much success within the first 60 days!  When creating your SEO plan, plan on continuously adding content to your website, targeting new keywords, using additional media (like video), etc… One of the other common search engine optimization mistakes people make is stopping SEO once they get results.  Once you commit to an SEO plan, keep the plan going for the duration of the site or you will find yourself dropping in the search engine rankings.

Common Search Engine Optimization Mistakes |The missing link

In addition to the on-site optimization techniques discussed, you will also want to focus on off-site optimization techniques as well, such as creating search engine value links.  The more high quality links you have aimed back at your website, the better for your search engine optimization campaign. So make sure your SEO plan includes spending time working to get more quality keyword rich back links pointing to your website.

Common Search Engine Optimization Mistakes | Not tracking your results

One of the more common search engine optimization mistakes can actually be applied to any type of plan; failing to track results.  You cannot correct what you do not track!  Financially, the rationale is simple:  put your money in what works and stop paying for what doesn’t work.  However, you cannot apply this logic to your business unless you’re tracking your results. Keep tabs on your keyword rankings, and use analytics to monitor the traffic to your website to avoid making common search engine optimization mistakes.
