Facebook Hack

Facebook Hack

If y0u’re going to attempt any kind of Facebook hack then you should be extremely confident in your skills as a hacker, I mean extremely confident.  Thats what a recent British student by the name of Glenn Mangham, 26, recently discovered when the police came pounding on his door in Yorkshire.  Now, Glenn Mangham the most recent Facebook hack culprit has been sentenced to eight years in jail.  So just what did Glenn Mangham steal from the social media giant to have folks so up and arms and what was his motive for the Facebook hack?

Facebook Hack | The Case

This case is being reported as the largest security breach in social media history.  Although the exact information that was stolen during the Facebook hack hasn’t yet been shared with the public, apparently it was a very expensive problem for Facebook to alleviate according to SlashGear’s blog on the Facebook hack:

The court was told this week that Facebook had spent $200,000 dealing with the actions the student had taken, but no real damage appears to have been done. “This was the most extensive and flagrant incidence of social media hacking to be brought before British courts. Fortunately, this did not involve any personal user data being compromised.”

If some private personal data stolen as a result of the Facebook hack then this case would have been much more damaging for Facebook’s reputation on the whole and would have most likely ended with even more severe consequences.  Let’s see what the defendant had to say on his behalf when addressing the Facebook hack.

Facebook Hack | Mangham’s Defense

Mangham believes that his actions were completely justified and even for Facebook’s benefit.  He says that he wanted to test Facebook’s vulnerability and after he finished, he would then provide the company with his findings.  Although this just sounds fishy, he claims that he did a similar hack on Yahoo sometime back and that they actually compensated him for his findings.

Mangham, a software development student, claimed he had been trying to expose weaknesses in Facebook’s security and was not driven by financial motives. “It was to identify vulnerabilities in the system so I could compile a report that I could then bundle over to Facebook,” he told Southwark Crown Court in London. He then planned to “show them what was wrong with their system,” he said, claiming he had previously performed the same routine with U.S. Internet giant Yahoo!

The judge didn’t seem to think that this was an act of kindness and concern on Mangham’s part, especially when it ended up costing the company quite a bit of time and money to fix.  I honestly believe that if this young man was trying to test the vulnerability of Facebook with this Facebook hack then he probably would have contacted Facebook first, don’t you think?  Let us know what you’re thoughts on the latest Facebook hack are in the comments section below.
