How To Use Search Engine Optimization Meta Tags.

What are Search Engine Optimization Meta Tags?

A meta tag is information that is inserted into the ‘head’ area of a web page.  This information is not seen by viewers to your site, but is instead used by browsers and search engines to relay specific information. While they were once extremely important for search engine optimization meta tags are no longer the be-all end-all of SEO.  Meta tags do allow a web designer the ability to control how their web pages are described by some search engines, provide some SEO benefit, and they also offer the ability to prevent pages from being indexed at all.

The Important Search Engine Optimization Meta Tags

Search Engine Optimization Meta Tags | The Title Tag

The title tag is what a user sees at the top of a browser window when they are on your site as well as in the search result that links to your web page.  This tag should be short, less than 60 characters, and should summarize your website.

Search Engine Optimization Meta Tags | The Meta Description Tag

The meta description tag shows what information your website contains or what it is about.  This tag should be less than 200 characters in length and written in simple and concise sentences.

Search Engine Optimization Meta Tags | The Meta Keywords Tag

The meta keywords tag should contain between 4 and 10 keywords or phrases separated by commas.  These keywords or phrases should relate to the topic of your site and should be used throughout the website pages.

Although meta tags don’t hold near the weight they once did with search engine optimization it’s important that you still include Title tags, description tags, and keyword tags  on your website to add that little boost that could put you ahead of any competition.
