What is Social Media?

Social Media
Social Media

Social media is any form of online publication or user-created video, audio, text or multimedia that are shared in a social media environment.  Sites such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and others have gained extraordinary attention and traffic on the internet over the last few years.   With this meteoric rise in traffic has come the emergence of social media marketing, a way of sharing a marketing message with users of these sites.

There are many social media sites on the internet, but we here we will focus on the most popular sites as of this publication and what type of social media marketing training upon which you should focus.

Facebook | Training

Just behind Google, Facebook is now the second most trafficked website in the world and has close to 1 billion users.  Facebook provides a venue for users to create and update their own personal profiles and connect share information, pictures, videos, as well as play games with other users.  Facebook training should focus on how to create a Fan Page, which Facebook applications to use, Pay Per Click marketing, group engagement, and most importantly, how to properly engage with others without seeming ‘spammy’.

YouTube | Training

YouTube is a social media video-sharing site that is now the 3rd most trafficked website in the world and is actually the second largest search engine behind Google.  Users can watch videos posted by others or even upload their own videos to be shared with anyone or embedded into other sites.  YouTube SEO is one of the lesser known benefits, therefore, YouTube training should focus on how to upload and tag videos properly to get to Page 1 of Google in minimal times.  In addition, the focus of YouTube videos should be to educate and show users how a product or service works.  Video marketing is one of the fastest growing segments of social media marketing, and businesses cannot afford to leave this valuable tool out of their online marketing plan.

Twitter | Training

Twitter is a microblogging service and social network that allows its users to post short, 140 character, messages to be shared across its network to a user’s connections.  Many companies use Twitter to update customers on specials, promotions, and other happenings with the business.  Twitter training should focus on how to optimize and set up a Twitter page, where to place links in the Tweet, how to obtain followers, and how to automatically interact and engage with others in your industry as well as your area.

LinkedIn | Training

Linkedin is a social networking site that encourages professional networking and business-oriented content sharing.  Users can connect with companies, co-workers, and other industry professionals to share ideas, communicate, and assist each other with business goals.  LinkedIn training should focus on how to optimize a profile page, a company page, company services page, utilizing groups, and LinkedIn Answers.  LinkedIn provides users the unique opportunity to engage with professionally like minded individuals and brand yourself as an industry expert.

Google+ | Training

Google+ is one of the newer social networking sites, starting up in June of 2011.  But in its first 7 months, it hit over 100 million users.  Google+ is similar to Facebook but adds 2 distinct features:  Circles, which allows users to segment their followers into specific groups and market to these groups separately, and Hangouts, which is a video conference / chat feature.  Google+ offers significant seo benefits over Facebook, and training should include how to connect Google+ Brand Pages with their websites, how to grow fans, how to properly engage with others, and how to best utilize Google+ Local.  Currently, Google+ is not that widely used, but it is estimated to be much more competitive (due to the obvious SEO benefits and YouTube & Local tie-ins) by mid to late 2013.  You won’t want to be behind the curve when this social networking site takes off, so start your training and build your following now!

Other Social Media Sites

There are many other Social Media sites available on the internet, but we have chosen to outline the most used and most trafficked sites above.  Other social media sites of interest include: Digg, Pinterest, Yelp, FourSquare, Squidoo, Slideshare, & Reddit.

Social media is not a fad, but rather a transition in the way we communicate and use the internet.  Embracing social media and developing a strategy to utilize social media into your marketing campaign is crucial to the future of any business.  Through focusing on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and LinkedIn you will be able to establish an significant social media presence for your business.
