Klout Score

Klout Score

Every business, large or small, should be concerned about their Klout score.  Your Klout score shows your true social media presence and effectiveness.  It can reveal strategies that are working with your social media campaigns or those that you may want to abandon for different techniques.  Sure most of us are already aware of EdgeRank, however a Klout score gives a much more analytical and clearly defined breakdown of a business’s social media success or failure.

Klout Score | The Company

Klout is an analytical company formed in San Francisco, CA in September 2009.  At first the Klout score measured influence across Facebook and Twitter, and recently Klout added YouTube, Foursquare, and LinkedIn to their analytics report.

Klout Score | How it Works

Your Klout score defines your social media influence and ability to interact with your users across social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.  Therefore all of your posts are scored based on how successful each one is in engaging users.  The Klout score is from 1 to 100 and is measured based on the following:

true reach (how many people you influence), amplification (how much you influence them) and network impact (the influence of your network). Whether or not you are registered with Klout, every user has a Klout Score. So far the only one person known to possess a perfect Klout Score of 100 is Justin Bieber.

So basically the moral to the story is to be more like Justin Bieber.  Just kidding, I truly doubt that its that hard to convince screaming 12 year old girls to interact with a pop singers site.  Let’s take a look at the three variables that create the Klout score as defined by Klout’s website.

True Reach – Your True Reach is the number of people you influence. We filter out spam and bots and focus on the people who are acting on your content. When you post a message, these people tend to respond or share it.

Amplification – Your Amplification is how much you influence people. When you post a message, how many people respond to it or spread it further? If people often act upon your content you have a high Amplification score.

Network – Your Network indicates the influence of the people in your True Reach. How often do top Influencers share and respond to your content? When they do so, they are increasing your Network score.

Klout Score | How to Increase Your Klout Score

You’re probably wondering how important your Klout score is and what you can do to improve it.  Well the Klout score is what the majority of social media marketers out there are using to judge their social media success.  Not to mention having influential friends in your network is extremely important when discussing a brand.  Therefore finding and reaching out to these folks is extremely important.  Look for them in Groups that are discussing your industry and interact!

Here’s what SocialMedia today has to say about increasing your Klout score:

  • Be outgoing with involved users. Interacting with inactive users can lower your score.
  • Be the big man on campus. Try to get more people to follow you than you follow in return.
  • Be trendy. Follow the trending topics and add your own twist to the conversation.
Where to begin?  Well first of all go ahead and obtain your Klout score and see what the report shows.  Then come back to BlackBoxSocialMedia and study techniques that can help you with your social media presence.  Run a Klout score once a week and see your influence jump!
