I used to share a house with a guy who was obsessed with the Titanic. There were many long, long evenings in which he explained to me in mind numbing detail about how the rivets were made of the wrong material and how the watertight sections were badly designed.

It got a bit repetitive after a while but at least it kept him from talking about the proof he had that man had never walked on the Moon.

One night when he was on about the rivets again I let my mind wander and I started to think how the Internet, and specifically SEO, could have helped save the famous ship.

Find Better Rivets

Ok, I suppose I better start off with the rivets in case my old roommate ever reads this. I don’t know how you looked for ship rivets in the old days but when I typed my search into Google I got back lots of relevant sites, including many telling me about the Titanic’s problems, of course. There are few things which are truly impossible to find these days and while many people thank the internet for this I think that we need to thank SEO as well. After all, if it wasn’t for this technique then we would never find the kind of site we were looking for.

While they were choosing rivets they could have bought a few more lifeboats online as well.

Check the Icebergs

Did you know that you can look up iceberg forecasts on the Internet?

Neither did I if I am being honest. However, all I had to do was type the words into my browser and as if by magic I discovered that the Mid Labrador Coast has no confirmed icebergs today while the East Labrador Sea has an unconfirmed number of the frozen things bobbing about in it. So now you know where to steer you ocean going liner today.

Can you imagine how the story would have turned out if the crew of the Titanic could have looked up this stuff on the Internet?

For a start I wouldn’t have had to suffer through the film with my wife a dozen times because it would just have been an ordinary Atlantic crossing rather than a tragic one. It is easy to take for granted the ease with which we can get hold of this sort of information but a lot of work goes into both the sites and the SEO work which make them easy to find.

Stay at Home

The time which has passed since the Titanic sunk makes it hard to imagine the very real impact which the disaster had on people’s lives. Over 1,500 people died on the 15th April in 1912, just over a century ago. It is easy to be flippant about tragedies which happened so long ago but it remains one of the biggest peace time losses of life ever experienced by mankind. Of course, the world we live in now is very different from the one which existed the day the Titanic left the port which is now called Cobh in Ireland. However, I can’t help being drawn to the fact that as well as some incredibly wealthy passengers there were also many poor immigrants looking for a better life abroad. This is something which many people still think about doing now. One big factor which helps a lot of people stay at home instead of travelling across the globe is that they can now work at home on SEO projects over the Internet and earn a good wage. It is a great job and while it might not have saved the Titanic had it existed back then it might have caused a few more of its passengers to stay at home instead of crossing the ocean in search of work.

No search engine optimisation company can save the Titanic now but they can make sure that the right people find the things they are looking for.
