President Barack Obama is no stranger to the benefits of utilizing social media to win an election. His historic leveraging of social media and social networks was hugely responsible for the President winning in 2008. Therefore, it’s no surprise President Obama will host Facebook town hall meeting in an effort to energize his political fan base for the upcoming 2012 election.

On Wednesday, April 20th at 4:45pm (EST), the sitting President will make social media history.  President Obama will host Facebook town hall meeting to offer a discussion about economic recovery and additional funding for innovation. President Obama will also answer questions that people post on either the Facebook Wall for the event or submit to Whitehouse.gov.

The 2012 election will have a stronger emphasis on the utilization of social media than any other election in history,” says Black Box Social Media Founder Curt Maly.  “Successfully utilizing social media during the election season will allow politicians in inexpensive and effective way to reach out to voters and energize their fan base.”

While President Obama might be the first sitting president to notably leverage social media in his election campaigns as well as his presidency, he’s not the first President to make it on   Facebook Live.   President George W. Bush stopped by Facebook HQ for a chat on the company’s live video channel while promoting his memoir in November.  However, it is safe to say that President Obama owes a great deal of his successful presidential run of 2008 to his utilization of social media.

Therefore, it was no surprise that on April 4, 2011, President Barack Obama announced his plans for re-election by sending out a YouTube video “It Begins with Us“, creating his official re-election website , e-mail blasts, and targeted text messages.

President Obama showed in 2008 that yes, you can leverage the benefits of social media during an election and have tremendous success,” says Mr. Maly.  “Quite frankly, I would expect all Presidential candidates, as well as many other savvy politicians, to increase their exposure by combining politics and social media.”
