What is the New Twitter?
The new Twitter is the death of the fail whale! Don’t know what the fail whale is? Well if you’re a Twitter fanatic like myself, you absolutely hate it when you are trawling through your news feed and getting updated on all of your interests, you try and retweet a great story, and bam there he is, the fail whale. This guy comes around every so often when Twitter’s servers can’t handle all of the action on its site at once. But CEO Cosotolo and his small team of tech nerd millionaires say goodbye to the fail whale (at least for the most part) and hello to the new Twitter. Over the past year the Twitter team has been brainstorming and innovating in an attempt to give the new Twitter a new definition and purpose, while retaining its much loved features of course.
The New Twitter | Whats Happening Now
First and foremost here is what Cosotolo has to say about one of the most important aspects of the new Twitter:
“We want to simplify the interface,” he said. ‘We want it to be dead simple and consistent between devices and platforms.” In other words, Twitter wants Twitter.com to look and have the same features as Twitter on tablets and Twitter on mobile devices. http://venturebeat.com/2011/09/08/twitter-costolo-press-conference/
Now here is some good news about the new Twitter for businesses, Cosotolo says that tweets from users that you don’t yet follow will find their way into your feed. You know what that means, your advertising reach will be much greater. Costolo also promises that users will be alerted on their smartphones when one of their phone contacts signs up for Twitter. That’s nifty, this way people you already like will be sent right your way, rather than searching for them manually.
Costolo also wants to make searching for hot topics a lot easier for all users with the new Twitter, he almost alludes to doing away with confusing hashtags in this quote from VentureBeat:
“Earlier in the year, people were hearing that Middle Eastern revolutions were happening due to Twitter and wanted more information than what they were getting in the news. But you had to know to go to Twitter and type in #Jan25. We want to make that a lot easier,” he concluded.”
The New Twitter | Future Business Prospects?
Everybody out there knows the power and reach of Twitter, so what will they be doing to increase their revenue with the new Twitter? Actually, nothing.
““I get a million emails a day about what Twitter could be doing to make more money,” the CEO said. “But I don’t think there’s anything else we need to do to make more money; the advertising business will sustain us.”
That’s great news for companies like HootSuite or TweetDeck or Social Media In 7 Minutes that offer detailed analysis to their customers about their Twitter activity. The new Twitter will allow them to stay afloat.
The New Twitter | Bottomline
It sounds to me that the new Twitter is really striving for a more easy to use database and in increase in advertising potential, which is great for any small or large business already in the Twitter game or considering it as a marketing platform. Costolo and his boys are revolutionizing the way we use social media and advertise. The new Twitter is your source for up-to-date news before it breaks the airwaves.
When using the new Twitter, Costolo says he wants everyone to feel Twitter is “the world in your pocket.” Oh yeah and faster servers and a brand-spanking new infrastructure means no more stupid fail whale, bye-bye.
