There are two common mistakes that newer investors will make.
The first is that people dream to big for their own good. For example, they set unrealistic goals and then become discouraged when they don’t hit them quickly. You really shouldn’t set a goal when first setting out other than knowledge. If you expect to go from never investing in real estate and the stock market and currencies to making $3million in your first year, you’ll never achieve it. You’ll disappoint yourself and quit. However, if your goal is to learn about investing principles and implement one strategy within a given time frame, you’ll fare much better.
The second common mistake is that people try to learn and master just one strategy and it’s typically the first investing strategy that you hear about. But what if that one strategy isn’t for you? For example, people like Mike Dillard have thrived on gold and silver, Robert Kiyosaki has thrived on real estate, and others have thrived on oil and gas, fresh water, foreign currencies, etc…
I know people who invest hundreds of hours studying and thousands of dollars investing in real estate knowledge only to realize that they really don’t like the topic. After a year or two, they’re right back where they started (minus some valuable savings). You won’t know what you’re passionate about unless you learn about multiple strategies.
Therefore, learn about the stock market, residential real estate, commercial real estate, currencies, gold, silver, fresh water, etc… and then become the master of one. This philosophy will also help you if the market should shift and you need to transfer to a different philosophy.
