Who’d have believed that 2012 will come so rapidly? Twelve years ago I was preparing for that greatest New Years Eve party ever (and possibly the end of the world). I imagined by now there’d be jet packs, flying cars, alien abductions, and President Pauly Shore. I couldn’t have been more mistaken (though happily about the last point) if I had picked the Cleveland Browns to win the Superbowl during the past decade.
However there have been some pretty incredible changes in Internet technology, particularly when it involves social media. If someone would’ve told me that pictures from the 90’s would be able to appear on a social site for every one to see, I would’ve never allowed myself to be photographed in a sombrero and a chicken outfit. I mean, really, shouldn’t there be a law stating that if you took embarrassing photos of yourself pre-social media days, then your friends shouldn’t be allowed to post it once social media sites gained popularity?
I recall how cool purchasing my first computer with Windows 98 was and all of us needing to share it. The ritual of making sure all my roommates were off the phone before logging into the slow dial-up Internet connection (yep, NetZero for 6 free hours of Internet time baby!), needing to unplug the modem in the phone socket whenever anybody wanted to make use of the phone or planning your time and effort to take full advantage of the limited amount time you’d get to spend online. Those days were like the ‘pong’ version of video games (actually, Doom was the big computer game at the time). But how the time have changed. 12 years ago, I was shocked to be able to look up movie times online; 5 years ago I was shocked that I could purchase movie tickets online; now, I can download and watch a movie instantly.
In fact, one of the biggest changes in Internet technology has been the ability to purchase items online. Because the times have changed and Internet speeds have grown to be faster (thankfully), more and more people are purchasing computer systems and laptops. Heck, I own a high tech desktop, 3 progressively outdated laptop computers, and an iPad. Many of us are constantly on the web and take advantage of online shopping while keeping up to date with friends and family on the (yup ‘the’- I’m almost 40 after all) Facebook. Huge numbers of people shop online. In many cases, it’s actually quicker and simpler than going to the store and getting pressured by an obnoxious sales clerk. The web has become the most well-liked method to buy and that i personally think will eliminate most shops in a long time.
What is the Future of Online Marketing? | Using Social Media Marketing
If you’re business isn’t taking advantage of Internet technology and social media marketing, then your business is missing out on potential customers; potential sales that your competition is not missing out on.
So many people are realizing that the traditional marketing methods of last century, like Yellow Page ads, newspaper ads, direct mail, etc… just aren’t working well in this day and age. Therefore, more people are taking advantage of having an online presence, focusing on search engine optimization strategies to promote their websites, and using social media to market their product and service. Heck, for my business, I personally use Facebook a great deal in addition to Twitter, YouTube, and Google+ among others. These social media sites are massive social networks with millions upon countless people interacting each and every day. They’ve massively grown in the last 12 years and are getting more and more popular each day. I recieve lots of attention from companies using social media marketing but it’s all highly relevant to things I like. After all, I selected who I follow on Twitter and Facebook.
If you’re a business proprietor and are planning to take advantage of the opportunities that social media marketing offer, then you owe it to yourself to get educated on the possibilities that these new technologies have to offer!
Now, if you’re anything like we, you probably didn’t predict this social media trend 12 years ago. It’s apparent that flying cars and jet packs didn’t quite make it into the future yet, but social media marketing opportunities have become a reality! This really is something I doubt anybody might have predicted and it is quite exiting to assume what I’ll be covering by the start of the next decade.
