Anonymous Wants to Kill Facebook
Just the other day I was having lunch in down town Austin, Texas, and I turn around and see a man with shoulder length hair wearing the expressionless mask from the film V for Vendetta. Apparently he was a supporter of the hacker group Anonymous and Anonymous wants to kill Facebook. Well, maybe. Before we jump into that lets talk about who the hell these guys actually are.
Anonymous Wants to Kill Facebook | Who They Are
Anonymous wants to kill Facebook, among others. The hacker collective originated in 2003 and they have no central leaders, and their main motive is to free the internet and protect freedom of speech. Their flag bears a man with a suit and a question mark for a head, its a symbol of anonymity. Which explains why the young man on the bus was sporting the V for Vendetta mask.
Why pay these guys any mind? Well CNN coined them as one of the major successors to WikiLeaks and that’s a strong statement my friend. And VentureBeat reports:
Anonymous has gained a lot of exposure in the last year with attacks on PayPal, Visa, Amazon, Bank of America, and various world governments. On Monday, the group successfully hacked and defaced the Syrian Ministry of Defense’s website. Holy cow!
Anonymous Wants to Kill Facebook | But Do They?
These rumors of a hacker group putting an end to Facebook have been circling the web since November, but recently a post from handle @AnonOps pretty much outright stated that Anonymous wants to kill Facebook. The funny thing is that soon after the comments were put out the same handle posted another comment that the reports were false claims. Its more than likely that the handle has several admins, so at this point no one knows what to think or believe. Honestly though so what if Anonymous wants to kill Facebook, they could never pull it off. But maybe they could, they’ve already pulled off quite a few successful raids of websites, particularly those of racist or discriminatory nature. But why Facebook?
Anonymous Wants to Kill Facebook
It seems that the group is separated on this particular raid, but supporters of it say that Anonymous wants to kill Facebook because of Facebook’s infringement on the privacy rights of world citizens.
As posted by VentureBeat, here’s what one supporter of the Anonymous wants to kill Facebook stated:
“Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed,” the members of #OpFacebook said in a YouTube video. “If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill Facebook for the sake of your own privacy.”
Geez guys you’re scaring me, I was just trying to post some pictures of my drunken night downtown, don’t ruin that for me. Of course, Facebook has been rumored to be illegally selling individual’s private information for profit, and if the rumors are true, then Facebook should suffer some consequences. Is this the right way to go about it?
Even if only half of Anonymous wants to kill Facebook, anyone who makes a comment like that without being prosecuted is a force to be reckoned with, whether they ever accomplish it or not. Zuckerburg is shaking in his sheets! Shaking in his sheets made of hundred dollar bills.
What do you think of the announcement that the hacker group Anonymous wants to kill Facebook and do you think that Facebook needs to update it’s privacy settings?
