Facebook Porn

You may have noticed some illicit images in your News Feed over the past few days, this recent influx of Facebook porn is the result of a recent Facebook virus that is spamming the social media platform with graphic and disturbing images.  The blog AllFacebook reported that Facebook was quiet about the Facebook porn at first simply removing the images quietly.  Now that the Facebook virus is spreading across thousands of people’s Feeds, Facebook has spoken out:

“Protecting the people who use Facebook from spam and malicious content is a top priority for us and we are always working to improve our systems to isolate and remove material that violates our terms,” spokesman Andrew Noyes said in an email. “We have recently experienced an increase in reports and we are investigating and addressing the issue.”

So what’s causing the Facebook virus?  Let’s take a look

Facebook Porn: The New Facebook Virus | Speculations

There are a ton of different speculations as to who started the Facebook porn fiasco and how it spread so fast.  Here’s an opinion from CNN:

One possibility: “Clickjacking,” when clicking on a friend’s image shares it in your own feed.

Hackers also may have compromised the accounts of users with weak passwords or tricked people into installing malicious code.

If you have never heard of “Clickjacking,” it basically refers to clicking on an icon that then performs an action that is hidden in the HTML code, such as stealing your private information or in this case posting this Facebook virus to your own wall.

Facebook Porn: The New Facebook Virus | The Images

Apparently these aren’t your average Playboy pictures that are appearing on Facebook either, in most cases they are violent disturbing images that are completely inappropriate for Facebook’s younger users, here’s what Fox News had to say about the Facebook virus images:

The content — in the form of links, videos, and images — began to appear Monday and includes doctored photographs of celebrities such as Justin Bieber in compromising situations, acts of violence and self-mutilation and even bestiality.

The long term implications of these images should be what Facebook should really be worrying about, because many users out there are already tweeting about deleting their Facebook accounts and leaving the network for good.

“Discovered a new porn site, it’s called Facebook,” wrote one user.

“Facebook should do something about the photoshopped porn images, it’s offensive,” wrote another.

Other users complained they had seen pictures of mutilated animals and people, in some cases adding that they had deactivated their accounts as a consequence.

So who is to blame?

Facebook Porn: The New Facebook Virus | The Culprits

Many reporters, speculators, and social media analysts alike are pointing their fingers at the underground hacker network, Anonymous.  If you’ve never heard of these internet outlaws, check out our story on them here, and why they want to “kill” Facebook.

Just last week, Anonymous announced on YouTube that they have created a Facebook virus that will “kill” the social network.  The narrator of the video states, through a robotic voice modulator, that the virus can access people’s accounts and send out friend requests and messages at will.  Whether or not this is the same Facebook porn virus that is now present on the network is the “Fawkes” virus that is spoken of in the video is currently unknown.
