How Does the New Twitter Web Analytics Tool Work?
The New Twitter Web Analytics tool, released Tuesday, should help provide some more information about how many people are visiting their websites to online marketers who rely on the social media giant for content distribution. Here’s what the developers of the new Twitter web analytics tool had to say
New Twitter Web Analytics Tool | Twitters Explanation
Today we’re announcing Twitter Web Analytics, a tool that helps website owners understand how much traffic they receive from Twitter and the effectiveness of Twitter integrations on their sites. Twitter Web Analytics was driven by the acquisition of BackType, which we announced in July.
The product provides three key benefits:
- Understand how much your website content is being shared across the Twitter network
- See the amount of traffic Twitter sends to your site
- Measure the effectiveness of your Tweet Button integration

Twitter Web Analytics will be rolled out this week to a small pilot group of partners, and will be made available to all website owners within the next few weeks. We’re also committed to releasing a Twitter Web Analytics API for developers interested in incorporating Twitter data in their products. https://dev.twitter.com/blog/introducing-twitter-web-analytics

How helpful will the new Twitter web analytics tool be for online marketers? On the surface, it appears to be less useful than Google analytics. In fact, Twitter even admits as much in a quote from VentureBeat:
“It’s a lightweight analytics service that isn’t designed to compete with more in-depth analytics delivered by companies like Google, Twitter director of web business development April Underwood said. But the company has been toying with ways to make it easier for sites to keep track of traffic coming from Twitter.”
“We know our partners use third-party analytics tools that go way beyond what we’re offering today,” Underwood said. “So we’re going to release an application programming interface (API) that will make their dashboards stronger.”http://venturebeat.com/2011/09/13/twitter-web-analytics-disrupt/
Other third-party analytic tools, like the one developed by Social Media in 7 Minutes, which allows you to manage all of your social media accounts and groups from one location, are able to provide much more detailed reports. But, as the article states, it is a good start.
