The Royal Wedding sets YouTube Livestream Records

YouTube Live today announced that its YouTube Livestream of William and Kate’s wedding was viewed by more than 300,000 concurrent viewers at 6 a.m. ET on Friday morning. When all is said and done, YouTube Live CEO Max Haot expects “at least 2 million” unique viewers to have watched the Royal wedding.  YouTube Livestream partnered with the Associated Press, UK Press Association, CBS and Entertainment Tonight for its coverage.

Did YouTube Livestream Set an All Time Record

While the viewership of the Royal Wedding set a Livestream record, did it set an overall record for web events?  Mashable.com reports that the event does not appear to be the biggest news event in web history. While the 4.6 million page views per minute reported on Akamai’s network this morning surpass the total for Barack Obama’s presidential election victory, they fall well short of the 10.3 million page views per minute record set last June when a World Cup qualifying match and the longest Wimbledon match in history took place simultaneously.
