If you are a blog reader or like to read news on the internet, then I’m sure that you’ve seen Digg’s logo at the top or bottom of the page alongside others like Facebook Share and Twitter, but you may have been asking yourself, what is Digg? Good question, especially if you are interested in spreading your businesses content on the web and increasing your presence. We are going to dive right into Digg’s history, what is Digg, and how it works.

Digg was started out as an experiment back in 2004, and as it grew in numbers it began including Google AdSense, in which users can add text, video, and image advertisements to their websites. However in the beginning one of Digg’s uses was for users to vote for or against online stories.
By it’s third version in 2006, Digg created several categories for its stories including Technology, Science, World & Business, Videos, Entertainment and Gaming as well as a View All section where all categories are merged. So Digg’s uses grew and so did its followers. As a matter of fact, having your story on Digg is going to really boost up your SEO presence because of the number of hits the website gets everyday.

Before when you “dugg” or clicked the Digg button below a story, it would redirect you to a success page, but now Digg includes the number of times the story has been “dugg” next to the icon. According to the website, “The number of diggs a story collects over time can affect how that story spreads and gains more popularity as it spreads more.”
Not to mention in May of 2009, Digg hooked up with Facebook Connect, so that you can users can link their Digg accounts with Facebook and share the articles they “dugg.” One of Digg’s uses is the ability to spread popular news across social networks with short URLs, so if you are a small business, it would be smart of you to include articles on your Facebook page as well as your website with Digg icons, in order to get the most hits for your PR material.

Another of Digg’s Uses is its new feature “My News.” Basically the “My News” page is different for every user depending on their interests. So as a business you may want to use “My News” to see what is trending about your particular field or market, this way you can find out better ways to write your articles to end up first in the search results for websurfers that are searching for content related to your field. Pay attention to keywords and links used in these top articles to see what you need to include in your articles to come up with better results.

One of my favorites of Digg’s uses is its unique advertising program called Digg Dialogg. Digg Dialogg allows Digg’s users to create questions for businesses or top level CEOs about their companies. The questions are then voted on and the top voted questions will be used in the interview. This is a sure fire way to see what is truly on your customer’s minds and see what you need to do as a business to best meet their needs.
So what is Digg, and what all can you do with it? Digg’s uses are endless, and as a business it can really increase your online presence and visibility by creating blogs that have Diggability through keyword based blogs, and integration with Facebook.
