Will Facebook’s Music Platform Change the Way the World Listens to Music?
There have been rumors circulating for quite awhile now about Facebook’s music platform hitting the social media site and those have just been confirmed. Facebook plans to join forces with Spotify, MOG, and Rdio to create the platform that’s due out next month according to a recent post from Mashable. We’re all patiently awaiting Facebook’s music platform.
Facebook’s Music Platform | What Will It Look Like?
Ever since these rumors started about Facebook’s music platform, everyone wants to know what it will look like and what it will include. The announcement of Facebook’s music platform is scheduled to be announced at Facebook’s very own f8 developer conference on September 22nd. The new service will allow Facebook users to listen to music while on the site. Why were the rumors circulating in advance? Well someone found it in the code of Facebook’s video chat service some time ago.
Facebook’s music platform will be a bit different from iTunes or other music applications, because Facebook will not be directly hosting or streaming any music itself. Rather it will follow the same strategy used for Facebook Apps or Games, the partners will be the ones streaming the music. This will be the role of the partners mentioned above. So all we know right now is that Spotify, MOG, and Rdio will be the preliminary companies that will host music on the site. However, its now unclear whether or not Facebook’s music platform will be open to third parties, but most likely it will be open to others just as its apps are today.
There are also a stream of other rumors circulating that they may not stop with Facebook’s music platform, and the next obvious step would be allowing users to stream movies through the site. Netflix? Who knows.
Here’s what a Facebook spokesperson had to say about Facebook’s music platform:
“There’s nothing new to announce,” a Facebook spokesperson told us. “Many of the most popular music services around the world are integrated with Facebook and we’re constantly talking to our partners about ways to improve these integrations.” http://mashable.com/2011/08/31/facebook-music-platform/
